About Ingonyama Trust

Who Are We

Our Identity
The Ingonyama Trust Board
The Ingonyama Trust was established under the KwaZulu-Natal Ingonyama Trust Act, 1994 (Act No. 3KZ of 1994) as custodian of approximately 2.8 million hectares of land across KwaZulu-Natal. The Trust exists for the benefit, material welfare, and social well-being of its beneficiary communities. The Ingonyama Trust (ITB), a Schedule 3 Part A National Public Entity, administers the affairs of the Trust and its land. Its mandate is to ensure that the land under its custodianship is effectively managed and developed in ways that uphold traditional land tenure rights while promoting sustainable socio-economic growth. As a steward of ancestral land, the ITB operates at the intersection of cultural heritage, governance, and development — balancing the imperatives of customary law with the demands of a modern South African state committed to equitable land administration.
